Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias visited the run-down area of Omonia in central Athens as police continued with a crackdown on crime and arrests of undocumented immigrants in the area.

Samaras, who spoke with shopowners and residents, noted that the cleanup was going well but said more must be done to “make Athens a safe place.”

A total of 621 migrants were temporarily detained by police in central Athens on Friday as part of the Xenios Zeus operation aimed at tackling illegal immigration. This brings the total number of immigrants stopped and questioned by police officers to over 15,500 people, out of whom 2,000 were arrested.
