The iconic Notre Dame cathedral has been engulfed by flames. Hundreds of firefighters rushed to save the Parisian monument from early on Monday evening, however the fire caused devastation.

On massive fire destroyed the spire and roof.

Greek leaders lamented the devastation.

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras offered support to the French people.

“We are deeply saddened by the destruction of the Notre Dame of Paris. It is not only a national disaster for France, but the European and the world’s cultural heritage. Emannuel Macron, we stand by your side,” Tsipras tweeted.

“We are devastated by the huge fire at the Notre Dame Cathedral. I would like to tell my friend Mayor Anne Hidalgo that today not only Paris and France are in mourning, but the entire world,” read an e-mailed press release from the office of the Mayor of the city of Athens George Kaminis.

Greek opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis was also saddened by the fire.

“The images of Notre Dame in flames are absolutely heartbreaking to watch,” Mitsotakis tweeted.

“Notre-Dame is a historical and religious landmark of Paris, of France and of Europe. All our thoughts and prayers are with the French people tonight,” he said.
