Three women with a passion for TV presenting and an even bigger passion for Aussie rules football has been given the green light from the AFL for an upcoming footy web series, to be released on the AFL website.
A welcome change from the typically blokey footy banter on television, Sirens will feature former ABC sport presenter Angela Pippos, comedian Kate McLennan and former ski gold medalist and Collingwood board member Alisa Camplin. The show, whose first episode was posted on the AFL website this week, is the brainchild of Pippos, who hopes the show’s concept will catch on and be taken up by TV networks.
Already the debut episode has garnered plenty of colourful comments on YouTube, with a number of viewers decrying the show as a “publicity stunt” by the AFL’s media arm.
The journalist told The Age she developed the show to get some female perspective on the blokey sport and explains title’s double meaning.
”In Greek mythology, the sweet voices of the Sirens caused sailors to crash into rocks. We’re not planning on being quite so demonstrative … well, not in the first week anyway.”
