McLaren’s Jenson Button started from pole position and led all the way to victory in the Belgian Grand Prix last Sunday.
Button went to the lead from the start and avoided the first corner crash when an errant Grosjean lost control of his Lotus and took out main contenders, Lewis Hamilton, Sergio Perez and Fernando Alonso.
Grosjean’s Lotus took became airborne after colliding with Hamilton and flew over the front of Alonso’s Ferrari. Japanese driver Kamui Kobayashi, who started from the front row, was also caught up in the first lap chaos, while Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado, jumped the start and was handed a 10 place penalty for Monza.
The crash took out four cars and opened the door for minor teams to climb up the table for some much deserved points. Post race, Grosjean was handed a one-race ban for causing the collision, which means he will miss next weekend’s Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
Button making just one tyre stop took the win 13.6 seconds ahead of Red Bull’s double world champion Sebastian Vettel and KimiRaikkonen third. Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg came fourth, his team’s best result of the season, ahead of Ferrari’s Felipe Massa and Australian Mark Webber in sixth.
Seven-times world champion Michael Schumacher marked his 300th grand prix with seventh place for Mercedes. Toro Rosso drivers Frenchman Jean-Eric Vergne and young Australian Daniel Ricciardo were eighth and ninth.
