Nick Kyrgios’ start to the clay-court season ended abruptly after the 21-year-old Greek Australian dumped out of the first round of the Madrid Masters Open following straight sets by German Jan-Lennard Struff, number 48.
His performance included unsuccessful underarm serves and a racquet break.
In the end, he was defeated by the German 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 in 66 minutes.
Spanish fans booed Kyrgios after he attempted an underarm serve in the opening set.
The young player did not seem to care too much about the match, and at the conclusion of the first round, sat on his chair and took out his mobile phone.
Struff had been in good form on clay with a quarter-final run at the Barcelona Open with wins over Stefanos Tsitsipas, David Goffin before going down to Rafael Nadal.
