The rocking SA girls from Lipsmack are back again with their new single Kinsvictim. With band members just returned from a trip to Greece, they have made sure that this single launch combines a bit of heritage and a lot of the Greek influence that they picked up on their time away.
When naming the new single Kinsvictim, the three girls’ Greek heritage came into play.
“The name of the song is actually an abstract derivative sourced from a fusion of Greek and English words, to eventuate a final meaning, “government’s victim,” explains Shivon of Lipsmack using the word ‘victim’ together with the Greek word for government ‘kivernisi’.
The single – which is a taking a slightly new musical direction for the band – is about an individual’s feeling of suppression within a conformist and structured society.
“Lyrically, the story is told from the first-hand perspective of a young teen who was always outcast from society because they were different, and depicts how the family around them didn’t nurture this difference but instead looked upon the kid with shame for not being normal,” Shivon tells Neos Kosmos.
The band add that although it is a bit of a new musical direction, it still has the distinctive Lipsmack character and sound.
“We really went heavier in this track and weaved elements of progressive rock which we hadn’t done in our music to that extent before.
“We absolutely love playing it, it has so much energy. It’s got a special place in our set now, and we are really excited that it’s recorded.”
And given that a Lipsmack live show is best seen to be believed, the ladies promise they will give all at their single launch.
“We’re a trio that are so integrated into each other’s lives by the Greek community, the family – particularly the cousins – and the friends, so when we play our music to the public, it’s a real bonding thing.”
Their live shows are jam packed with energy and a rock adrenalin that’s complimented by the songs played. And there’s always plenty of hair flying around from rocking out to the tracks.
After the single launch, the girls are planning to get the songs recorded for a full length album. But all in all, they will be gigging again now that they are back from their holiday and “hope to inspire others to explore the beauty of art that is music”.
