Australians travelling to the UK can now use their biometric passports at automated ePassport gates that will allow them to avoid airport queues.

The gates use facial recognition technology to compare the passenger’s face, including the faces of children aged 12-17 years and who are accompanied by an adult.

Children under 11 years and their accompanying adult cannot use the gates.

The changes are part of the UK’s new global immigration and border system that aims to improve the passenger experience when it comes to passengers visiting the country. Expanding the use of ePassport gates is part of the system that allows for greater efficiency.

A total of 1.4 million Australian citizens arrived in the UK in 2017.
