While on his tour Down Under for ‘Romiosini and Beyond’, Greek singer Dimitris Basis took time out of his schedule to pay a visit to students at one the Greek Community of Melbourne’s (GCM) schools.

Joined by fellow musicians, George Doukas on guitar and Thanasi Pilarinos on bouzouki, the trio performed for students, teachers and parents at the Greek Centre on Lonsdale Street in Melbourne’s CBD.

Before his impressive performance, Basis was given a tour of the classrooms by principal Manos Tzimpragos and GCM Board Member Nick Dallas, during which the singer had a chance to sit down and talk with students.

As the son of migrants himself – Basis was born in Germany and moved to Greece with his family when he was eight – he connected with students who had recently migrated from Greece to Australia. Basis asked them about their own experiences, and what it felt like to now call Australia home.

Following his performance at the Melbourne Recital Centre on Friday night in ‘Romiosini and Beyond’ conducted by George Ellis, he also took the opportunity to give students a little lesson on ‘Romiosini’, a masterpiece by poet Yiannis Ritsos set to music by composer Mikis Theodorakis.
