This week the Greek community has been deeply saddened at the passing of Neos Kosmos founder, Takis (Dimitris) Gogos, aged 88, on Monday.

Through the newspaper, Mr Gogos gave members of the community, their issues and concerns a platform, and also played a key role in promoting football.

In recognition of Mr Gogos and his work, South Melbourne Football Club (SMFC) has announced it will be paying special tribute to Mr Gogos this Sunday.

“SMFC is saddened to learn of the recent passing of Takis (Dimitri) Gogos.

“Gogos was an icon of the Greek community as the founder of the popular newspaper Neos Kosmos,” the club acknowledged in a statement on their website.

“His work for the Greek Australian community, including the promotion of sport through his publication (in particular football), was enormous.”

The statement went on to announce that as a tribute to Mr Gogos, the club will hold a minute’s silence prior to their home match against Bentleigh Greens at Lakeside Stadium on Sunday, with players donning black armbands.

“We send our sincerest condolences to the Gogos family, as well as everyone associated with Neos Kosmos.
