Pronia empowers, advocates and cares for the Greek Australian community. It has been a vital support system for the first wave of Greek migrants, to build a strong community over 47 years in the making. The organisation marked National Volunteer week at the Hall of the Greek Orthodox Parish of the Presentation of Our Lord at Coburg.

Volunteer programmes provide regular visits to isolated elderly in their home or aged care facilities, help in fundraising or even offer expertise in areas of legal, financial and migration advice to disadvantaged members of the community.

Anna Kaloudi, one of the volunteers who addressed the function, said that her visits to the elderly are “a feast of joy for both them and myself. Our discussions begin with simple everyday things and end up in discussions full of meaning about life values and I inhale their wisdom and invaluable experience.”

Guest speaker Maria Strintzos inspired those present with her volunteerism in Ethiopia.

This week’s theme for volunteer week was ‘Making a World of Difference’.
