Abstention was high in the Greek regional and municipal elections held on Sunday, 2 June.

The rate touched upon 70 per cent in some regions, whereas there were areas noted where only one in three citizens showed up to vote.

The abstention rate for the Attica region was 58.74 per cent in the second round and 41.14 per cent in the first round.

The area that recorded the highest rate of abstention was noted in the northern Aegean region where 66.55 per cent of islanders did not show up to vote.

In Athens, only 33.33 per cent of citizens went to the ballot to vote for the next mayor while the abstention for the municipality of Thessaloniki reached 62.61 per cent. Abstention for the municipality of Piraeus was 65.77 per cent.

The lowest abstention rate was recorded for Patras where 49.68 per cent of the citizens showed up to vote.
