The Spartans were not in a forgiving mood on Saturday as they welcomed Old Carey at Rathmine Reserve.

Their opponents were the only team that have managed to defeat them so far in the season, subjecting the Hawthorn Spartans to a narrow loss by a 13 point margin back in late April.

The loss gave the Spartans an even greater motive to prove themselves against last season’s finalists.

Of course the visitors had no intention of simply surrendering to their intentions, making life difficult for the Spartans in the opening minutes of the game. But the great efforts from many of the new players including Ryan Sack and Anthony Coluccio (who made their debut with the club) helped the home side extend their league in the second quarter and after that things became a lot simpler.

Old Carey continued to put the pressure on but the margin had gotten too wide for them to get back into it, giving the Spartans yet another win this season.

Thanks to this result, they will remain at the top of the ladder with 10 victories and just the one loss (to Old Carey) as they have no games for the next couple of weeks.

This will provide the players with a necessary opportunity to rest, as some of them picked up injuries along the way.

The Spartans will resume their efforts on Saturday 20 July.
