Skiathos Alexandros Papadiamantis International AIrport is notorious for its close proximity to the beach and nearby yachting docks. Despite signage warning people not to get close to the edge of the airport runway, the temptation for tourists to get as close as possible to snap a photo or get impressive footage of incoming aircraft scraping over their heads is just too large.

The ability to legally stand so close to the runway gathers plane-spotters and other fascinated people to the location. It isn’t always safe for plane watchers. Last August a 10-year-old boy was injured after being “blown away” by airplane gasses while watching the spectacle.
