Thessaly side Larissa have been dumped from the Europa League (formerly UEFA Cup) after a disappointing 1-1 draw at home. Minnows KR Reykjavik will continue in the Europa League after qualifying with a 3-1 aggregate score and will face FC Basel in the next round.
Larissa were the strongest team in the first half, trying to do their best in the warm conditions after a string of missed chances it was Thanassis Tsingas who gave the Greeks the lead at the 28th minute with a shot from inside the box.
The hosts at the Alcazar stadium needed one more goal in the remaining hour to take the match to extra time, but their pace dipped as the time went by, given also the early stage of the season.
The Reykjavik side were far better prepared and managed to pay Larissa back with a shot from close range by Gretar Sigurdsson at the 75th minute.
Larissa’s 10,000 fans undoubtedly would have been disappointed with the result, and will have to wait until the Super League kicks off in late August for another competitive fixture. Cypriot side Anorthosis Famagusta were also knocked out of the competition and will rue having given up an away goal in their first leg win.
Having lost 2-1 to Anorthosis in last week’s first leg in Cyprus, Montenegrin outfit Petrovac won by the same scoreline to force extra time before eventually progressing 4-3 on aggregate thanks to Luka Rotkovic’s second goal of the game after 102 minutes.
