Greek students competing in this year’s International Mathematics Competition (IMC) in Bulgaria have won big, taking home one gold medal and two silver.

Representing Greece were Kyprianos Iason Prodromidis, Sotiris Armeniakos and George Kontogeorgiou from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

Prodromidis won the gold medal – a particularly impressive achievement given he is a first-year student and was competing against older students with more experience under their belts.

His fellow students, Armeniakos and Kontogeorgiou were each awarded a silver medal.

Organised by University College London and hosted at the American University of Bulgaria from 28 July to 3 August, during the course of the competition each student was required to solve five problems each day and to compete for two consecutive days.

The tasks drew from mathematical fields such as algebra, analysis (real and complex), geometry and combinatorics.

Students were required to be enrolled in tertiary education, completing their first, second, third or fourth year, and could be no older than 23.
