Victoria Police believe that former boxer Antonio ‘Tony’ Salaris, 73, may have been stabbed to death near his home in Kilsyth, Melbourne’s outer east, as the result of a home invasion gone wrong.

The victim had survived a stroke five weeks earlier, and had been found lying on the ground with multiple stab wounds. A neighbour found him near his Browning Street home at about 9am Wednesday. Detectives say that he had been home alone for a number of hours before the stabbing, and the killer remains on the run.

“The only reliable description we have is ‘a male’, Detective Inspector Tim Day said. “There’s no sign of forced entry to Tony’s premises at all.”

Mr Salaris, a boxing enthusiast and avid guitarist, was father of three, grandfather of seven and had been married for 49 years.

The family of the Melbourne grandfather say it’s “absolutely cruel” he was killed “for no reason.”
