Henry Richard Hammond, the man charged with killing Courtney Herron in May, appeared via a video link during a brief committal mention in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday.

His lawyer Tim Schocker requested that the case be adjourned until 27 November so that a psychiatric assessment could be completed.

Magistrate Franz Holzer accepted the proposal.

Ms Herron’s parents were in court, along with other onlookers.

Magistrate Holzer passed on his condolences to family members and her parents, who were present during the proceedings. He extended his sympathies twice.

25-year-old Herron was found dead by dog walkers at royal Park, Parkville, on 25 May having died from ‘horrendous’ injuries.

At the time of her death she had been sleeping rough and tackling a number of drug-related and mental health issues.

Mr Hammond, also homeless, was also struggling with his own problems. The court was told in May that Mr Hammond had a number of issues that would affect him in custody, such as “a diagnosis of possible delusional disorder, possible autism spectrum disorder and historical diagnosis of ADHD”.
