Canberra Olympic is on the hunt for a new senior coach following the decision by long serving coach Frank Cachia to step down once the NPL national finals are complete.

The well-respected and popular Olympic coach has just completed his sixth season at the club after joining in 2014 and leading the club to numerous trophy successes, including this season’s premiership, as well as helping to raise Olympic’s profile on the national scene.

Olympic’s record under Cachia’s leadership rates amongst the best in any state, in the NPL era. The senior Olympic team has made finals in each of the six seasons, including four grand finals in succession. The Olympic trophy cabinet is sagging under the weight of silverware including three NPL League Premierships, two NPL ACT Grand Final Championships, two FFA Qualifying Federation Cups, and two Charity Shields.

In addition, Olympic’s national profile has been boosted under Cachia’s leadership particularly with the deep FFA Cup run in 2016 when Olympic made it all the way to the semi-final stage before losing to Sydney FC.

After the club’s announcement that the coach would be stepping down, Cachia tweeted: “After 8 years (6 at Olympic and 2 at Monaro) it’s time for a break. Still hopefully more than one game to go, but the time is right following our third league title in four years and another opportunity to showcase Canberra on a national stage.”

He will be in Canberra Olympic’s dugout for this weekend’s elimination final against Wollongong Wolves in the national NPL Finals.

Cachia qualified for his FFA ‘A’ Coaching License last year and is sure to attract the interest of other clubs, particularly if and when the national second tier competition eventuates.
