Following a massive raid in a squat building last Thursday where police apprehended and removed 236 illegal immigrants in Athens, another raid on Monday saw 130 foreigners escorted away.

The empty building, formerly a school, where the foreigners had been residing since 2014 is located in Exarchia. The classrooms and spaces were divided into rooms using bed sheets and curtains.

Authorities had to block off Oktavious Merlie and Prassa Streets to conduct the operation which resulted in several families and young children being escorted away.

Apart from the people living in the building Greek police found chickens that were laying eggs to feed the migrants.

Greece’s New Democracy government have taken strict measures against illegal migrants following complaints from local residents reporting loud screaming, violent arguments and criminal acts taking place on a daily basis.

The previous building raided by authorities is located near the French Embassy in Kolonaki. Police have declined to give any details, however, footage taken by local Greek media shows migrants who are mostly Afghan and Syrian, boarding buses with their belongings.

After their registration and identification, those with legal documents will be transferred to facilities hosting refugees and migrants, most likely in Corinth where other migrants from evacuated squats in Exarchia have been taken.

Those without papers will be deported.
