Award-winning Greek artist Danai Nikolaidi-Kotsaki will be taking part in the world’s largest annual free-to-the-public outdoor sculpture exhibition.

Held in Sydney to signal the beginning of summer, the Sculpture by the Sea display in Bondi usually draws up to 450,000 visitors over the 18 days it is held along two kilometres of the Sydney coastline and this year will be no exception, thanks to over 100 works by sculptors from Australia and around the world.

Ms Kostaki, an award-winning Greek artist, is the recipient of the inaugural $20,000 Greek Artist Program for Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi, 2019. The program which was developed by the “Hellenic Club of Sydney” and members of the Greek Australian community of Sydney, is the initiative of the Mayor of Waverley Council, Councillor Paula Masselos.

The program was developed and coordinated with help form the Consulate General of Greece in Sydney with the aim of showcasing Greek artistic talent and to help raise Greece’s profile in the arts world.

To be eligible for the program the recipient must be a fine arts student or someone who graduated within 10 years of completing their degree in Greece. The recipient artist is to be chosen by the Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi, 2019 curatorial panel.

Ms Kotsaki was born in Athens in 1992. She went to the Experimental Music High School and Lyceum of Pallini. She went on to study sculpture at the prestigious School of Fine Arts of Athens under Professor George Lappas.

Her work tackles primary physicality and interaction. Her sculptures, which are mainly in metal, are kinetic installations in analogy and interaction with the human body. Sometimes the pieces produce sounds when they are moved. She has won numerous awards for her work and is currently on a scholarship with the Institute of Arts in Yogyakarta in Indonesia.

Sculpture by the Sea, which celebrates its 23rd anniversary this year, will be returning to the spectacular Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk from 24 October – 10 November 2019.
