As speculation grows that the former England midfielder could be tempted by a 10-game guest stint, following his admission that he will leave LA Galaxy in December, a number of A-League clubs are looking at all the options as they attempt a move that would rival Sydney FC’s signing of Alessandro Del Piero.
Perth Glory owner Tony Sage has already admitted signing the star would be the one of the biggest successes of his career.
“We are seriously looking at it,” Sage said. “We are getting indications from Lou Sticca and asking him the right questions. He is doing most of the work. We understand Beckham’s management is looking at various leagues and the A-League is one of them, but there is genuine interest.
“On a personal level, signing David Beckham would be up there… The number one thing other than my decision to buy Glory in the first place,” Sage said.
“It’s a huge commitment, but something I would love to pull off.”
Melbourne Heart CEO Scott Munn also threw his hat into the ring, saying the club is set to join the bidding war for Beckham’s signature, and believes the A-League would prove a perfect fit.
“It’s certainly real that we’re going to put forward an offer that is compelling and the opportunity is there for him to come here, that is legitimate,” Munn said.
“I’m sure he’ll assess every offer and let’s hope Melbourne Heart is part of that.
“The great thing in our advantage is the timing; the season’s up and running and he’s match fit so he can sign in that January window and then play right through.”
Adelaide United are also interested with club chairman Greg Griffin revealing he had instructed football director Michael Petrillo to make initial contact with Beckham’s agent.
“Once David Beckham ends his season with LA Galaxy the race is on,” Griffin told The Adelaide Advertiser.
“We are positioning ourselves to give us the best possible chance.”
And perhaps somewhat surprisingly, Central Coast Mariners are also positioning themselves as a possible Australian destination for the former Manchester United player.
John Singleton has said he would help back any move to bring the star to the coast, and Mariners boss Graham Arnold said he believes Beckham would fit into the team fine, despite the usual policy of not having a marquee player.
“I think you can fit David Beckham into any squad,” Arnold said.
“I know he’s a good guy off the field, he fits into what you want to do, it’s not all about him, he doesn’t have a massive ego that will destroy our team morale or culture.
“I’m pretty confident if he did come into the Central Coast squad he’d be a great fit.”
