Maria Sakkari has made it through to the second round of the Australian Open, after her impressive display against Margarita Gasparyan (6-2, 6-2).

The 24-year-old from Athens showed great composure and focus as she needed only about an hour and a half to dispatch her opponent and book her place into tomorrow’s second round match.

Sakkari came into the game looking confident and refreshed as she quickly gained the advantage, breaking her opponents serve and putting herself in control of the match up.

The Russian world number 61 attempted to get back into the game reducing the margin to 1-3, but that only seemed to work as a motive for Sakkari to move in and finish the job.

After gaining the psychological advantage, things were made a little less complicated in the second set, with the young Greek putting the game to rest after just 25 minutes, as she was able to conserve her energy for the difficult days ahead.

Her next opponent will be Japanese Nao Hibino, the world number 56 who made the upset against Peng Shuai to make it to the second round.

The game will be held tomorrow, while in the men’s singles Stefanos Tsitsipas will take on 36-year-old veteran Philipp Kohlschreiber.

The German is currently ranked at 79, while he has made it up to 16th position back in 2012 and could prove a tricky opponent for the young Greek.
