Theocharis Lalacos has been appointed as the Greek Ambassador to Cyprus, taking over the reigns from Ilias Fotopoulos, who was in the role until October, 2019.

Approved by Nicosia for the position on Monday, until recently Mr Lalacos had been serving as Ambassador of Greece to the United States.

He pursued studies in History and International Relations in the US, before going on to join the Hellenic Foreign Service in 1986.

From 1990 until 1994 he was Consul at the Consulate General of Greece in Sydney.

Mr Lalacos went on to serve for two terms at the Greek Embassy in Ankara, from 1994 until 1998, and again from 2010 until 2013. During this time, he dealt with Greek-Turkish relations, as well as the ongoing Cyprus issue.

After his first term in Akara, he returned to the US, where he served as Counsellor for Political Affairs at the Greek Embassy in Washington between 2000 until 2004.

In 2004 he was the Consul General of Greece in Alexandria, Egypt until 2007.

From January 2009 until March 2010, Mr Lalacos was Head of the CFSP/ESDP Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, before relocating to Skopje. There he was  Ambassador and Head of the Liaison Office of the Hellenic Republic between 2013 and 2016.

Following that, Mr Lalacos returned to the US in 2016, where he was appointed Ambassador of Greece to the US.

Mr Lalacos is expected to commence his term in Cyprus sometime in February.
