Malamo (Mitsi) Carras celebrated a milestone birthday in Brisbane last week with her husband, Neos Kosmos correspondent John Karra.

Aside from her connection to the newspaper, her 80th birthday has become news for an entirely different reason.

Raised in Egypt, before migrating to Australia Mitsi settled in Greece for a number of years.

At 19, she reached the final five in Greece’s national beauty pageant, Star Ellas, and meanwhile was also working in the film industry.

Among her notable achievements was working as a body double for the the country’s national star, Aliki Vougiouklaki in two films, H Neraida kai to Palikari (1969) and H Daskala Me Ta Xantha Mallia (1969), as Vougiouklaki was pregnant at the time.

Since then, Mitsi’s life has taken her down other paths, eventually migrating to Australia and going on to become a mother and grandmother.

Last week, she celebrated her 80th birthday with a party organised by her children George and Anna (Catsoulis), and had her grandchildren by her side for the day.
