A new initiative was announced during Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ online teleconference with several world class athletes.

Mr Mitsotakis “hosted” a series of well-known professionals at Maximos Mansion, including Stefanos Tsitsipas, Maria Sakkari, Lefteris Petrounias, Pyrros Dimas, Anna Korakaki, Katerina Stefanidi and Nikos Kaklamanakis.

The athletes welcomed the Greek government’s coronavirus measures that resulted to a reduction in the spread of COVID-19. They shared the challenges they are facing as they continue their training while observing social distancing restrictions.

On his part, Mr Mitsotakis said the pandemic has provided an ideal opportunity for many Greeks to come into contact with sports.

And considering that the improvement of public health has always been one of the long-term goals of the government, Mr Mitsotakis pointed out that the experience of this crisis could prove to be a great legacy for the future, since there are times when people need an opportunity to introduce good habits into their daily routines.

“I am certain that, once we are able to come out of our houses in a more organised manner, that the ideals of our society in general and more specifically in regards to healthy exercising and volunteering will have improved greatly,” Mr Mitsotakis.

He added that, should all go as planned, the first sporting facilities will be able to open their doors as early as May, and he thanked the athletes for their participation in the “Staying At Home” initiative, which included several videos encouraging people to stay home during the Easter holidays.
