Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson who recently recovered from their bout with Covid-19 while they were in Australia last month, have announced that they will be donating their blood to researchers looking to find a vaccine against the virus infection.

The couple contracted the virus while they were in the Gold Coast for pre-production work on Baz Luhrman’s latest project, a film based on Elvis Presley in which Mr Hanks was to portray Presley’s manager Colonel Tom Parker.

The couple have since recovered and returned to Los Angeles. Ms Wilson recently announced that the couple had joined in a medical study to determine whether their antibodies would help researchers to find a vaccine against the Covid-19 virus.

Speaking on a podcast for the US public broadcaster National Public Radio’s website podcast Wait Wait … Dont Tell Me!, Mr Hanks said the couple had been approved to donate blood for research.

“We have not only been approached; we have said, do you want our blood? Can we give plasma? And, in fact, we will be giving it now to the places that hope to work on what I would like to call the Hank-ccine (sic),” said Mr Hanks on the podcast.
