Rhythm 1656, a new Greek-speaking radio station, started broadcasting from Melbourne this week on the AM frequency.
Since December, the station has been broadcasting their programs via the internet, but now will transmit all broadcasts from the airwaves.
Rhythm 1656 will be the second Greek-speaking radio station that broadcasts a 24 hour, seven day a week program in Melbourne alongside 3XY. 3XY was the first station to broadcast an entirely Greek program for listeners in Melbourne and has been doing so since the mid 1990s.
“We are very excited that another Greek voice will be heard in Melbourne,” said the director of the station and one of the owners, Manolis Mavromatis. Chris Babatsias is the other owner of the station.
Mr Mavromatis is known for his service to radio stations 3XY and SBS.
According to Mr Mavromatis, programs of the station will be “quality, entertaining and informative” with short news bulletins in English and to appeal to a “somewhat younger audience.”
He added that the signal reception of the station will be a 50 km radius from the central area of Melbourne and if you find that you are further away, you can always live stream from the internet.
