Greek Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew expressed his support to Archbishop Makarios of Australia who has come under fire by Orthodoxos Typos, a publication of Mount Athos.

In the past, Orthodoxos Typos has expressed staunched criticism of the Archbishop of Australia, especially following his awarding of the highest honour that the Greek Orthodox Church in Australia can bestow to Senator Andrew Bragg. He is the first non-Greek and non-Orthodox person to receive the honour and the news was not well-received due to the senator’s role as a leading campaigner in favour of same-sex marriage during the plebiscite campaign of 2017 that led to the legalisation of same-sex marriage in Australia.

Patriarch Bartholomew sent a letter to Mount Athos calling for an end to the criticism against Australia’s hierarch.
