Greek Australian SA Chief Superintendent Joanne Shanahan will be farewelled by her family and friends on Friday 8 May at 11am according to SA Police Chief Commissioner Grant Stevens.

“As with every other family who has lost a loved one during this COVID-19 response, the ability to celebrate Joanne’s life is severely restricted,” Commissioner Stevens said adding that the funeral service will be held in a way that enables as many people as possible who knew or cared about Joanne or her family to be involved, and the South Australia Police will be playing its part as well.

“We are devastated. We have known Joanne since the day she was born, and it is really sad not to be able to pay our respects and farewell her the way she deserves. Nevertheless, we must respect the COVID-19 restrictions and make sure we are there to support her beautiful family and parents,” Mr Nick Frossinakis, one of the family’s closest friends, said. Mr Frossinakis had met Joanne’s father when they both migrated from Rhodes to Australia in the 1950s.

“Joanne was just an amazing soul. She was a wonderful wife, mother, sister and daughter to her two parents who worked really hard to raise their family and their three daughters here in Australia. Joanne respected her family and her heritage and made everyone proud with her work and her contribution to the community. She will be missed dearly,” Mr Frossinakis told Neos Kosmos.

According to Commissioner Stevens, the hearse will be travelling from Joanne’s home address along a specified route, so anyone who would like to come outside and pay their respects as the hearse travels that route will be able to do so.
