The peak body representing multicultural communities in NSW, the Ethnic Communities’ Council of NSW (ECCNSW), expressed grave concerns over increased racism and hate speech directed towards minority communities.

ECCNSW Chair Peter Doukas OAM said he was concerned that frustrations over COVID-19 were being directed towards minorities, particularly Asian-Australians.

“It’s understandable to feel anxious right now, but there is no excuse for racism,” Mr Doukas said.

“This is a time when Australians should be pulling together, not harassing and abusing minorities.

“If you see a racist attack, call it out and report it. You have a responsibility to act.”

The ECCNSW condemns racist behaviour and hate speech and stands by those minority groups which have been targeted during this difficult time.
