Australians can enjoy a drive-in from time to time, but – though Athens did briefly have a drive-in during the 1980s – young Greeks only know about this type of cinema experience from American movies.

As Greece heats up and summer fills locals with optimism as they put the worst of COVID-19 behind them, a new drive-in cinema is set to open its doors to the public on 1 June.

At the moment, the location of the drive-in is a closely guarded secret but the Facebook page Athens Drive-in Cinema announcing it already has thousands of fans and is growing in popularity.

The teasers on the site asking people whether the prefer gyros or tacos and movie quizzes are giving Athenians a tantalising taste of what they are in for.
