Today, the Greek Community of Melbourne commemorates Greek National Day with a parade at the Shrine of Remembrance. Thousands of students of all ages will salute the heroes of the 1821 uprising against the Ottoman Empire and will re-affirm their commitment to preserving Greek history and the Greek Orthodox tradition in the Antipodes.
The secretary of the organising committee, Kostas Nikolopoulos, tells Neos Kosmos, “the younger generations of Greek Australians will attend en masse and pay their respects to the protagonists of the historic uprising on March 25 1821, which led to the liberation of Greece after four hundred years of continuous Turkish occupation”.
Mr Nikolopoulos urged the members of the community in attendance to respect the sacred area of the Shrine, reminding the community that “commemorating the Greek National Day at the Shrine is a privilege which we must retain for the coming generations”.
The political leadership of Australia and of the state of Victoria will be represented at the commemoration, together with the leadership of the Greek Orthodox Church and the diplomatic delegation of the Hellenic Republic in Australia.
The program for the day is the following:
11.45 am
Doxology at St Efstathios Cathedral, Dorcas St, South Melbourne.
12.00 am
Participants converge and take their designated positions on Tom’s Block alongside the service lane of St Kilda Rd.,
alongside Linlithgow Ave and Anzac Ave.
12.30 pm.
Participants form in groups along the service lane.
12.45 pm
Groups move to the steps leading to the forecourt of the Shrine.
12.50 pm
Officials take their positions at the steps leading to the Shrine.
1.00 pm
Parade commences. Some schools and community groups line up around the Eternal Flame.
1.45 pm
Service at the Eternal Flame.
2.00 pm
Parade concludes. The crowd vacates the Shrine.
