Former NSW Labor minister Milton Orkopoulos, 62, will appear in Newcastle Court tomorrow via an audiovisual link.

Mr Orkopoulos, who served as Aboriginal affairs minister in the government of former NSW premier Morris Iemma, is a convicted paedophile who spent 11 years in prison for child sex offences before being released on parole last year. He was put back in prison after allegedly breaching his parole.

He faces historical charges relating to two boys in Lake Macquarie and the Mid-North Coast during the 1990s, and has also been charged with 15 new child sex abuse offences.

The fresh charges include five counts of aggravated sexual assault and three counts of causing a child to participate in child prostitution.

The alleged offences took place through the 1990s, according to NSW Police Superintendent Danny Sullivan, who did not give more details regarding the charges.

Superintendent Sullivan said police had offered counselling and support to the victims.

“These matters are very delicate and when a victim comes forward we’re very conscious of the trauma that coming forward may cause them,” he said.

“We have very experienced detectives who work with those victims on this journey to where we are today with someone being charged with 15 offences.”
