The elderly community of Victoria are the most vulnerable with all of Friday’s six deaths being of elderly people in aged care.

On Friday St Basil’s Homes for the Aged in Fawkner mourned the death of five elderly residents who contracted COVID-19.

The Greek Australian aged care facility located 17km north of the CBD has been battling with COVID-19 infections since the first tests came back positive more than a week ago.

Currently 48 of the 150 residents in the facility have caught the virus, along with 27 members of staff bringing the total to 73 staff members and residents who have tested positive for COVID-19.

On Wednesday, the home was asked to isolate with Commonwealth teams that included experts from Aspen medical who were called in to replace regular staff.

The new team is working on infection control protocols.

In Victoria, at least 45 aged care homes have now reported outbreaks causing grave concern for the care of Australia’s grandparents.
