Adelaide United’s chance at scoring a place A-League finals remains unsteady after a 1-1 draw with Sydney FC at ANZ Stadium.

Reds defender Jordan Elsey started the match off strong for the team, scoring in the 13th minute.

Unfortunately their chance to stanglehold onto sixth place was crushed by Sky Blues forward Adam Le Fondre right before half time.

This was Le Fondre’s 19th goal of the season, making him one of the highest scoring players alongside Melbourne City’s Jamie Maclaren.

The second half did not see the Red and Sky Blues give up easy, with both goalkeepers saving their teams from a loss.

Sydney FC’s Andrew Redmayne blocked Lachlan Brook’s strike in the 52nd minute, while Paul Izzo knocked out Alexander Baumjohann’s goal only a few minutes later.

Izzo went back in and dived to deny Milos Ninkovic’s 68th-minute long-range attempt and Redmayne’s also shone through again with his reflex save disrupting Reds midfielder Riley McGree four minutes later.

The draw took sixth-placed Adelaide to 35 points on the ladder giving them hope for a spot in the finals and leaving the Newcastle Jets behind in seventh place.

Adelaide United are only five points ahead of Western United FC and Western Sydney, meaning a slim chance for Newcastle to make it into the finals with only one game left. United have three games left ahead of the Reds, while the Wanderers have two games to play making for a nervous Adelaide United front.

Tonight Western United will square up against the Western Sydney Wanderers, both hoping they can knock Adelaide out of sixth spot for the finals.

On Saturday night Perth Glory will be up against Melbourne Victory. The matches will return on Monday with Brisbane Roar taking on Sydney FC and Adelaide United will be playing their final game for the campaign on Tuesday night against Melbourne City.
