South Australia’s richest man, Con Makris is planning big things for his new conquest. The businessman has recently bought the Gold Coast’s Marina Mirage retail complex and hopes to give it a new lease on life.
“We intend to give it a bit of polish and bring it back to the standard that existed when Christopher Skase opened it, or even better,” Mr Makris told goldcoast.com.au.
“My wife and I have travelled the world, and Marina Mirage is a truly unique property that needs to be harnessed and protected.”
The businessman is hoping to give the 25-year-old complex a makeover that will attract international interest to the Gold Coast. Already the complex houses international brands like Calvin Klein, Tommy Bahama, Tommy Hilfiger and Hermes.
Marina Mirage, built by Mr Skase’s Quintex group in the late 1980s and an adjunct to the Sheraton Mirage Hotel, was bought by Mr Makris for $52 million in a deal that settled last week.
Makris is keen to invest in the flat-lining Gold Coast strip and has also made a $50 million-plus offer for the retail-office area at Broadbeach’s The Oracle.
