There were 42 new COVID-19 cases recorded in Victoria today but no new deaths were recorded, which means that the national death toll continues to be 816. The last time Victoria had a death-free day was on 15 July when there had been 177 new cases recorded.

Melbourne’s 14-day case average is now 2.9 away from the 50 needed to proceed to a further easing of restrictions on 28 September.

Tuesday also sees the sitting of the Victorian inquiry into hotel quarantine. The inquiry will examine how COVID-19 spread from seven quarantined travellers at the Rydges on Swanston Street and the Stamford Plaza to more than 30 people, mainly security guards, who then transmitted the virus to their family and friends.
