Victoria’s Premier Daniel Andrews said former health minister Jenny Mikakos’ decision to resign this morning was the “right choice”.

“As you’re aware, Jenny Mikakos resigned, I believe this was appropriate course of action to take,” Premier Andrews said, but added he did not speak with her before she published her scathing resignation letter where she “strongly disagreed” with evidence he had given during the hotel quarantine inquiry on Friday.

“She’s a very, very hard working person and I am grateful to her for her effort and I am grateful for her contribution to the party.”

He said that he did not interact with Ms Mikakos this morning before or after her resignation. The only contact they had was a text message which Premier Andrews received, but he did not elaborate what was in the text message.

Ms Mikakos told Neos Kosmos that she “called the premier this morning to advise him of my decision and that I had written to the Governor. As he did not answer my call, I texted him to alert him to the letter I sent him. I did not resign via text,” she said.

Mr Andrews told the text, “She sent me a text. I did not speak to her. I have not spoken with her since.”

Asked about whether he would be stepping down, he said he wouldn’t.

“No I will not, I don’t run from problems and challenges,” he said.

“I have a very important job to do and that is to get those case numbers down. I don’t run from challenges…and I am going to get it done.”
