While the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was in Crete with Greek Prime Minister Kyiakos Mitsotakis and other dignitaries yesterday, Chania police went on high alert searching for a tourist couple who escaped their quarantine hotel for some sightseeing despite testing positive for COVID-19 on their arrival on the island.

The French couple ignored regulations to remain in their quarantine hotel and “popped out” to see the sights of Chania. Their disappearance from the hotel prompted a huge mobilisation by the city’s police, reported ekriti.gr

The couple who were to have been to have been quarantined in the hotel at Megala Chorafia, left the hotel to drive to the city centre. They reportedly walked around the centre of Chania and were eventually found on Tuesday night in the city centre. They were taken back to their quarantine hotel.

Meanwhile, other than the absconding couple, there was just one case of COVID-19 reported on the island, at Heraklion, yesterday.
