Plans to create a beachside club at iconic Bondi beach would require cordoning off 30-40 metres stretch of sand by Waverly Council.

Newspaper reports state that the events company, have proposed for Amalfi Beach Club to operate over a number of date ranges over the summer period, with the club running from Thursdays to Sundays between noon to 9pm in the form of 2-hour sessions.

Sky News host CHris Kenny said, “It’s not really Australian, is it? We don’t want to see part of the beach privatised or cordoned off do we? Aren’t all beaches for all of us in this country?”

His guest speaker, Greens MP David Shoebridge, agreed.

“I think that this is an attack on the beach to be quite frank,” Mr Shoebridge said.

“I think we understand that putting a lease for a café in a park might help people enjoy the park, there are circumstances where that works.

“But when you start messing around with beaches, and you start saying you want to rope off beaches in Australia, I think as this conversation is perhaps going to show whether you’re from the left or right of politics we’ve got a kind of unified voice here.

“Our beaches are pretty precious, they’re kind of like Australian temples in some ways.”

The initial proposal submitted to Waverly Council, for the club to operate from November to February, was deemed unsuitable in May, however a new proosal has called for new dates from February to May 2021.

The events club wants to charge $80 per person for two hour slots with food and drinks included in the price. Guests would be able to choose between the 10 cabanas, four booths or 20 sun lounges and be served food from a rotating selection of local restaurants by private waiters right to their lounge as is the case in Greece.
