The first of a two-day meeting of the European Council concluded in Brussels on Thursday.

The Council’s full agenda included COVID-19 developments in Europe, relations with the United Kingdom (post-Brexit), climate change, and relations with Africa.

Friday’s agenda will include Turkey’s aggressive behaviour in the eastern Mediterranean following a proposal put forth by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to European Council President Charles Michel.

At statements to the press prior to the opening of the meeting, France and Germany warned Turkey that it would need to stop its provocative actions in the region, and gave it a week to clarify its positions, according to a Reuters report on Thursday.

As the two-day European Council prepared to open its session, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said in a joint press conference with his German and Polish counterparts that Turkey’s provocative acts are “unacceptable”.

European Parliament President David Sassoli was critical of Turkey’s provocations and the activities of the Oruc Reis which is back in the same location it was last April. He also said that Turkey “acted unilaterally” in reopening the Varosha coastal strip in Cyprus.

Reflecting the same stance, German FM Heiko Maas said that sending the Oruc Reis back to the area was “inadmissible”, Reuters reports.

Government Spokesman Stelios Petsas said Ankara has shirked its commitments twice in a short space of time.
