Just as it looked like the game would end on a goalless tie, Ahmed Hassan brought Olympiacos a late victory with a header.

Olympiacos revelled in the win against French team Olympique Marseille on Wednesday night, during a Champions League home game.

The Greek club began with a frustrating first half, unable to turn any shots into goals.

Yann M’Vila shot a little too far, volleying the ball over the bar. Star player Youssef El-Arabi was also denied a close-range shot by Marseille’s Duje Ćaleta-Car, whilst Florian Thauvin took a wide shot from the other end.

Pedro Martins’ front continued fighting on in the second half but were once again knocked back due to a VAR check in the 52nd minute that denied a goal for being offside.

The target was missed once again in the 69th minute when Olympiacos midfielder Lazar Randjelovic hit the post, before Marseille’s goalie Steve Mandanda’s swift hands palmed away an attempt by Mathieu Valbuena.

The tide turned when Hassan entered the pitch during a late substitution for midfielder Giorgos Masouras and giving the team its magic touch.

One minute into overtime Valbuena found a brilliant opportunity to cross over to the unmarked Hassan, who sent a header flying past a static Mandanda, securing a much deserved win for the Red and Whites.

In a post match interview, an emotional Hasan shared his overwhelming joy for his golden moment.

“It’s a very important day for me. This is my first participation in the Champions League. But also because, on this day five years ago I lost my father and I dedicate this goal to him. It is very important for me and I am glad that we got the victory…”

Olympiacos has just under a week to prepare for the next match, going up against Portuguese team FC Porto.
