Greece confirmed 1,547 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, a jump up from 1,259 on Tuesday. There were also 10 deaths, bringing the total number of Greek casualties to 603.

This marks a new negative record for the country since the start of the pandemic.

The areas most affected are Athens and Thessaloniki with Attica recording 419 new cases and 384 in Thessaloniki.

There are 108 patients in ICUs with the average age of 65 years, and 93.5 per cent who are intubated have an underlying health condition or are over 70 years of age. The number of intubations are increasing daily, adding pressure to the public health care regions.

There is public debate in Greece on whether new measures should be added to contain the spread of the virus with many stating that the country has been late whereas others are stating that the results of the night curfew and mandatory use of masks inside and outdoors will be evident on 6 November.
