Unfortunately Cypriot team Omonia Nicosia were struck down once again in their Group E Europa League matches.

The Cypriot hosts were beaten 2-0 by Granada during last Thursday’s match at GSP Stadium.

The Andalucians set the tone early on, as midfielder Yangel Herrera scored a mere four minutes into the game with a fierce left-foot shot from inside the penalty area.

The Cypriot front missed a key opportunity when Maxime Gonalons conceded a free-kick for a foul on forward Fotios Papoulis. It was Éric Bauthéac that took the kick but missed the target.

Goalkeeper Fabiano Ribeiro de Freitas did however deny a Luis Suárez goal, diving to his left to turn the ball away in the 24th minute.

The game did not get any easier when Omonia’s Michal Ďuriš was red carded after copping a second yellow card for tackling from behind, 10 minutes after his first for lunging.

Fabiano made another save one minute into the first overtime, blocking Darwin Machís’ long range effort.

In the second half Suárez came back to rectify his missed goal from earlier, doubles the visitors’ lead in the 63rd minute.

Omonia’s goalkeeper managed to save another Suárez  goal just five minutes after conceding.

Midfielder Thiago Santos tried to bring some consolation to the Cypriot front, attempting a goal in the 73rd minute but a dive to the left by goalkeeper Rui Silva denied the shot.

Thiago went back to try again in the 80th minute, but was knocked back again.

Omonia will be heading to Spain to try and avenge their loss against Granada on 26 November.
