For millennia humans have been dancing about, expressing themselves through movement. Now, people can take their breakdancing skills to the Olympics! The Paris 2024 Olympics will mark the debut year for adding in breakdancing as an official sport.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) had also added surfing, rock climbing, skateboarding and three-on-three basketball to the 2020 Olympics lineup.

The IOC made the decision to add the sport in an attempt to modernise the games after the organisation had some worries that the event was beginning to seem boring and irrelevant to the youth of the world.

“With the many options that young people have, we cannot expect any more that they will come automatically to us. We have to go to them,” IOC boss Thomas Bach said in 2015.

The official format of the competition is yet to be revealed, but sources point to a classic ‘dance battle’, as it had been trialed at the 2018 Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires.
