Sebastian Vettel extended his lead in this year’s drivers championship when he finally won on home soil ahead of fast-closing Finn Kimi Raikkonen, and his Lotus team-mate Romain Grosjean of France in third place.

The defending triple world champion had to survive several spells of intense pressure to bring home his Red Bull ride to victory in the drama filled German Grand Prix.

A Formula One cameraman was hit by Mark Webber’s flying wheel during the Red Bull driver’s pit stop after eight laps. As Webber took off from the pits, the wheel flew off the right rear axle of Webber’s car, bounced through two garages and hit a cameraman in the back. The cameraman was treated immediately by medical staff in pit lane before being transferred to the circuit medical centre.

In another incident after 24 laps, the Safety Car was called out to slow drivers, when the Marussia of Frenchman Jules Bianchi (who had earlier jumped out), without a driver in the cockpit, rolled backwards down the track in front of the oncoming racing field. Track staff failed to control the car as it slowly rolled backwards from its parked position and across the track before hitting an advertising board and coming to a stop.
