The new Consul General for Greece in Melbourne is in Australia, and will take over from Consul General Dimitrios Michalopoulos who requested to return to Greece early after three years of service.

Mr Emmanuel Kakavelakis, the new official, has already held numerous diplomatic roles in Egypt, Nigeria, Lisbon, Tirana and Beirut.

Currently in hotel quarantine, he told Neos Kosmos that he feels honoured to be here.

“I am looking forward to cooperating with everyone and came with my sleeves rolled up for work,” he said.

Originally from Crete, Mr Kakavelakis had visited Australia many years ago in an official capacity with former Greek president Kostis Stefanopoulos.

Mr Kakavelakis is looking forward to making connections in Australia just as he had in Alexandria where he was posted as Consul General for Greece in Alexandria, Egypt.

“Even though many years have passed since my mission to Alexandria, I feel as though it hasn’t been an hour,” he told ekalexandria.org.

Set to assume duties in February, he will step into the role left vacant by Mr Michalopoulos who left at the end of last year after saying his farewells.
