The 2014 Lonsdale Street Greek Festival will be held on February 8 and 9, a month earlier than previous years.
The Antipodes organising committee initially submitted February 1 to 3 as the prefered dates to the Melbourne City Council, but were pushed forward since it would clash with Chinese New Year celebrations.
The new dates in February move the festival away from the traditional March dates that tended to coincide with Greek Independence Day.
It also frees up the festival, so it doesn’t interfere with a very busy March event calendar. The city hosts the Formula 1 Grand Prix, the Moomba Festival, the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, the Melbourne Fashion Festival and the Melbourne Flower and Garden Show all throughout March, and on countless occasions has overshadowed the Greek Festival.
