Greece confirmed 1,428 new coronavirus infections and 51 deaths on Sunday, with only one of these identified at the country’s entry point. Meanwhile, the night before countless of people continued gathering at town squares around Greece, without masks or physical distancing, partying until the early hours of the morning.

Videos on social media show young people crowding together in Patra, Chalkida, Chania, Volos, Lamia and many other towns.

Residents of Chania, Crete, told FlashNews that young people had gathered at Splatzias Square shortly after 11pm. The music was so disruptive that residents near the area could not sleep.

“There may have been around 1,000 people,” wrote one person in a message to the site. “They are everywhere in backstreets, taking drugs, drinking, having sex wherever they can, urinating in our yards and doors. I can’t sleep.”
