Olympiakos celebrated its second consecutive league title – the team’s 46th Greek title –  at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus.

It was a first-half goal by Giorgos Massouras that ensured the win in the empty stadium in a game which took place without spectators due to COVID-19. The fans at home, however, were ecstatic that their beloved Reds beat long-time rivals PAOK 1-0.

The win set off partying as thousands of Olympiakos fans flooded the streets in an unstoppable fiesta.

Celebrations at the Acropolis

The Cultural Ministry complained that around 500 fans stormed the grounds of the Acropolis, during celebrations for winning this year’s championship. There was roaming around the 2,500-year-old marble temples for 15 minutes to hang a banner.

There was no damage caused to the monuments and no injuries or arrests were reported.

In a statement, the Greek Culture Ministry said: “The staff at the Acropolis reacted calmly. They contacted the police and tried to keep them outside the area but the number of fans was overwhelming.”

The ministry said the fans tried to justify their invasion arguing that supporters of cross-town rivals Panathinaikos had pulled off a similar stunt five years ago.
